What is asbestos?

Asbestos Testing Philadelphia, PA

Asbestos is a silicate mineral commonly found in buildings constructed before 1980. It was a popular construction material during the 20th century due to its widespread availability, affordability, and fire resistance. Asbestos was utilized in the construction of a wide variety of materials such as flooring and ceiling tiles, pipes, siding, pipes, insulation, and more.

The inhalation of asbestos is a serious hazard to health and safety, and asbestos fibers are easily disturbed during the construction and demolition of older buildings and homes. As a result, federal, state, and local agencies strictly regulate the handling of asbestos, so it’s necessary to have a building tested for asbestos before starting renovations or demolitions.

The City of Philadelphia requires an asbestos abatement permit to be obtained before the removal or encapsulation of asbestos that is larger than 80 square feet. This process requires an independent Asbestos Project Inspector (API), which is where Synertech comes in.

We have a team of licensed Asbestos Project Inspectors on hand to assist in renovation and demolition projects in the city of Philadelphia and the surrounding areas to help you ensure that your project stays on track.

The asbestos testing process

How is asbestos testing performed? In order to test for asbestos, a material must be examined and analyzed using approved scientific methods.

Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) is the most frequently used technique for building materials. For airborne asbestos, Phase Contract Microscopy (PCM) is widely used to measure fiber concentrations that can indicate that asbestos is present in air samples, but if the fibers are too small to identify using PCM, then Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) is used.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines an asbestos-containing material as a material that contains more than one percent asbestos fibers.

Asbestos abatement project design

Asbestos Monitoring Philadelphia, PA

In addition to testing for asbestos, we also construct asbestos abatement project designs. A comprehensive design package consists of a technical specification with drawings and related contract documents.

In addition, our design team conducts pre-bid and pre-construction meetings with contractors and oversees the bidding process. Once abatement is initiated, our licensed air monitoring technicians perform air monitoring and quality control during the entire remediation sequence.  Post abatement testing and inspection followed by a comprehensive final report is prepared once all removal is completed.
